Janice Long

Janice Long, 79, of Flemington passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 2016, at Susque-View Nursing Home.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1937 in Lock Haven and was the daughter of the late Charles and Mariam Hartman who were separated when she was an adolescent. She lived with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Brown on High Street in Flemington until she graduated from high school.

Janice was united in marriage to Edwin Long on Feb. 4, 1956.

Janice was a graduate of Lock Haven High School in 1955 and graduated from Lock Haven State College, later to be given university status, in August 1969.  While attending Lock Haven she earned degrees in Special Education, Elementary and Secondary Math.  She later went on to pursue a master’s degree at Penn State University in education.

She was a Special Education teacher in the Keystone Central School District from September 1969 to June 1998, and she retired early due to illness.

In addition to her husband, Ed, Janice is survived by three daughters, Deborah (Roger) Wolfe of Flemington, Cindy Olson Long of Jersey Shore, and Michele Long of Oregon, as well as one son, Traves “Buck” Sr. (Diana) Long of Castanea. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Chad Wolfe, Christopher Long, Matthew Wolfe, Traves Long Jr. and Cierra Croak, and six great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Flemington United Methodist Church.

Janice was an avid fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles. She enjoyed spending time with family and going on car rides with her husband.

Over the years, she and Ed enjoyed going on several cruises and traveling to Myrtle Beach and Florida on a yearly basis.

Back in her younger years she enjoyed hunting with her husband, Ed, and was successful in shooting several deer.

While teaching she was the only Special Education teacher who attended the Special Olympics on a yearly basis.

Due to her wishes, there will be no public service held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Janice Long Special Prom Committee, Attn. Lori Martin, Robb Elementary School, 400 E. Church St., Lock Haven, Pa. 17745.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven.
