Paul J. Higgins, Jr.

Paul J. Higgins, Jr., 83, of 154 S. Jones St., Lock Haven, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at Haven Skilled Rehabilitation and Nursing.

Born Jan. 7, 1933, in Lock Haven, he was the son of Paul J. Higgins, Sr. and Agnes Donovan Higgins.

He received his early education at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1950.

From there he enrolled at the former Lock Haven State Teachers College. His education there was interrupted by time in the service and family business obligations which postponed his graduation until 1958.

While attending college he was employed part time by the former Pennsylvania Woven Wire Co. in Lock Haven and the Lock Haven Auto Co.

In 1955, upon the death of his father, he assumed the managership of the family business, The National Hotel on West Bald Eagle Street in Lock Haven, which was operated by the family until it was destroyed by fire in 1996.

On Feb. 9, 1957, he and Eleanor L. Andrus were married in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lock Haven by the Rev. Charles W.M. White.

In later years he was employed as an auto salesman by Met Auto Sales in Lock Haven. He was also employed for three years as a substitute and homebound teacher by the Keystone Central School District.

Paul was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 131 in Lock Haven since 1931. He was also a longtime member of the Lock Haven Council 1774, Knights of Columbus where he was active in many functions, serving as Grand Knight on two different occasions. He was a member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians.

He is survived by his two daughters, Julie (Wayne) Peck of Concord, North Carolina and Jennifer (Rusty) Bottorf of Lock Haven, and four grandchildren: Kaleena (Jeremy) Tripp and Courtney Peck, both of Concord, N.C., and Briana and Trey Bottorf, both of Lock Haven.

A son, Timothy, preceded him in death in 1968.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. at the Moriarty Funeral Home & Crematory, 112 E. Church St., Lock Haven, with Rev. Father Joseph Orr officiating.

Friends and family will be received at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions in Paul’s name may be made to the Lock Haven Catholic School Endowment Fund through the funeral home.
