Elvera J. Crissman

Elvera J. (Teeny) Crissman, 79, passed away Jan. 6, 2017, at Juniper Village at Brookline Skilled Nursing Facility, State College,  where she had lived for the past three years.

She was born June 20, 1937, in Lock Haven, the daughter of the late Allen R. and Rose Severino Crissman.

Teeny, a nickname she never outgrew, attended the St. Agnes School for eight years, and then attended and graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven. She went on to obtain a RN nursing degree at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, and then took a position as head nurse at the Glennon Infirmary at Lock Haven University, which she held for more than 35 years (January 1961 to June 1996). During those years, the Infirmary was a 12-bed facility, offering full-time nursing care for LHU students. Teeny very much enjoyed attending to the students, and she made many friends over those years, who continued to stay in touch with her. At the time of her retirement, Teeny was honored with a beautiful engraved plaque, the “Lock Haven University Outstanding Service to Students, Faculty & Staff” award.

She was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Holy Spirit Church and had been an active member of the Alpine Star Lodge of the Sons of Italy.

Through the years, she loved living in the family homestead on Bridge Street in Castanea — with special celebrations and visits from friends, aunts, uncles and cousins. When Teeny’s father died in 1963, she continued to live with her mother, and then, many years later, became her full-time caregiver, until Rose’s death in 2001.

Surviving are her brother and guardian, Harry A. Crissman, and his wife Maelo, who live in State College; a niece Angela, and her husband Steve Matz, and their children, Brennan, Ella Rose and Raena Marie Matz, living near Lock Haven in McElhattan.

Teeny spent many, many happy hours, enjoying her visits to the Matz family’s home, and she loved having the kids come to stay with her.

Teeny’s family and friends will be received at the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Holy Spirit Parish, 3 E. Walnut St., Lock Haven. Celebrant will be Father Joseph Orr.

Interment will be at the Dunnstown Cemetery in Lock Haven, adjacent to her mother’s and father’s graves.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, through the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, to the Lock Haven Catholic School.
