Gilbert E. McCombs
Gilbert E. McCombs, 84, of Lamar, passed away on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home in Duncansville.
Born on April 23, 1932, he was the son of the late Orley and Ruth Shultz McCombs. On Sept. 4, 1953, in Snydertown, he married the former Marion R. Lannen, who survives at home.
Gilbert attended the Purchase Line High School. He worked several years at Dotterer’s Farm in Lamar and at Woolrich Woolen Mills for 10 years. He then went to work at Cerro Metal in Bellefonte, retiring in 1995 after 25 years of service.
Gilbert enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he earned the rank of Staff Sargent and retired after 20 years of service.
Gilbert was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Snydertown. He was also a member of the Sugar Valley Indians Camping Club and the Bald Eagle Motor Cycle Club. He had a great love for the outdoors.
He furthered his education by taking an ASI class through the mail on small engine repair. He used that knowledge to work on small engines throughout the neighborhood.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 63 years; a daughter, Karen A. Etters and her husband, Lloyd, of Beech Creek; a son, Kevin E. McCombs and his significant other, Diane McDonald, of Lamar; three brothers, Richard and his wife, Francis, of Indiana, Pa., Melvin and his wife Cheryl, of Blanchard, and Randy and his wife, Chris, of Punxsutawney; and a sister, Dolores Miller and her husband, Gerald, of Lamar.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Justin Etters and his wife, Molly, and Shawn Moyer; a great-grandson, Berkley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Larry.
Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home in Howard. Memorial service will be on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Snydertown with Pastor Frank Harpster, Jr. officiating.
Graveside services with full military honors will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hublersburg Cemetery.
