Maj. Steven Guy Bowes

Maj. Steven “Steve” Guy Bowes, 73, of Jacksonville, Fla. passed away Wednesday June 21, 2017, in Riceboro, Ga.

He was involved in a motor vehicle accident while driving to Lock Haven for the annual Lock Haven High School Class Picnic. Steve was born Dec. 22, 1943.

A 1961 graduate of Lock Haven High School, Steve served in the Army as both an enlisted soldier and officer. During his honorable and decorated career, he had overseas tours in Vietnam, Korea, and the Panama Canal Zone.

Steve graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA degree in business administration and economics from Park College, Parkville, Mo. in 1973. Retiring in September 1982 from Ft. Bliss, Tx., Steve settled in Excelsior Springs, Mo. with his wife and children. Steve was a member of the Wood Heights Optimist Club.

Following retirement, Steve had a stellar career assuming leadership roles in various companies in which he worked tirelessly to streamline expenditures and maximize efficiency. He retired in November 2000, following the death of his wife, Barbara J. (Gutterridge) Bowes.

Relocating from Vacaville, Cal. to Florida, Steve met his current wife, Marilyn Rozell Pickard.

Additionally, Steve was preceded in death by Edward C. Bowes (father); Margaret A. (Zerbe) Bowes (mother), and Edward L. Bowes (brother).

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Steve was an avid fisherman and a man who loved to tinker in the garage, building and fixing things. One could always find a crossword or sudoku puzzle book nearby, a hobby that kept him busy in the wee hours of the morning, when it was too early to tinker.

As much as he was serious, humor was a strong trait of his persona. He often times played a little joke here and there and could easily make one smile. Education was at the heart of his parenting, whether it was providing tidbits of trivial knowledge or factual information and life long lessons.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, at home; his brother, Mike (Ridgway, Pa.); two daughters Kimberly (Berlin, Md.), and Kelli (Sacramento, Cal.), and their spouses, Jef and Dave. Through marriage, Steve gained a bonus son, Erik, (Chicago, Ill.) and daughter, Heather (Gainesville, Ga.) and her husband, Dave.

Steve was a proud “Papa” with four grandchildren, Steven, Jessica, Jackson and Isabella and three bonus grandchildren, Sven, Finn and Liam. There are many nieces, a nephew, great nieces and great nephews.

Treasure the memories of a simple but deep man who was loved and well respected among his classmates, military friends, colleagues and his family.

The family will have a private memorial in August. If you desire, donations may be made in his honor to the Disabled Veterans (DAV Charitable Service Trust). Please visit cst.dav.org for information.
