Wayne Lynn Johnson

Wayne Lynn Johnson, 63, of Lynchburg passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Mary Laird Johnson.

Born in Lock Haven, he was the son of Louise Haagen Johnson of Beech Creek and the late Harold Johnson. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Jeremy Clark and his fiance Amanda Rogers of Lynchburg, Va.; two brothers, Barry Johnson and wife Karen of Blanchard, and Dale Johnson and wife Susan of Beech Creek; one sister, Joy Ketcham and husband Kurt of Beech Creek; one grandson, Andrew; and a number of nieces and nephews.

After moving to Lynchburg in the ’70s, Wayne began his teaching career at Jefferson Forest High School where he also served as the school’s first wrestling coach, an assistant football coach, and as athletic director. He later taught and coached in Amherst County and retired from the Lynchburg Public Schools. He was also a member of the Colonial Officials Association and he refereed area high school football games, wrestling matches and umpired area softball games for over 30 years. He was a member of Memorial Christian Church.

A funeral service honoring the life of Wayne L. Johnson will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, in the Dean L. Wetzler, Jr. Funeral Home, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, with Pastor Mark Riley officiating. Interment, Hayes-Fearon Cemetery, Beech Creek. Friends will be received in the funeral home Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, from 6-8 p.m.
