George David Hammill, Sr.

George David Hammill, Sr., 87, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 15, 2018 in Lakeland, Fla.

George was born in Erie, Pa. on Dec. 26, 1930.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1949-1954, followed by his 42-year career with Hammermill Paper.

Ten years of his career were spent as Maintenance Planning Supervisor at International Paper before he retired to Lakeland, Fla.

George is survived by his wife, Nora Hammill; children, George Hammill, Jr., Joseph Hammill, Julie Hammill Craig, and Ricky Hammill; step children, Traci Peters, Kris Muthler, Martin Gehrlein, Carrie Gatto, and Karen Buckalew; brother, Neal Burke Hammill; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Basil. He was preceded in death by his infant, twin daughters; brother, William Hammill; sisters, Dorothy Hammill Sullivan, Betty Hammill Tillman, Elva Hammill Green, and Sue Hammill Rinke; and loving wife, Joyce Hammill.

George was a man of God; full of encouragement, love, and humor. He was often found singing or whistling a tune. George had a strong love and dedication for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by those that love him.

The viewing and Christian Mass will be conducted in Erie on Thursday, Jan. 25th from 1-4:30 p.m. at St. Boniface Church, 7367 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, Pa. 16509.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the American Heart Association.
