Gilbert ‘Gil’ Maton

Gilbert “Gil” Maton, 92, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

Gil was born in 1925 in East Hampton, Connecticut, son of the late Jules and Marguerite Maton. Gil was a graduate of East Hampton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served with distinction in the European theater.

He returned to New York after the war and met his wife, Joanne Thompson, a Jersey Shore native. After initially settling in Jersey Shore the couple moved to the Washington, D.C. area where Gil began a career in industry. He found success and assumed a variety of roles over time, most notably serving as the president of Tracor Jitco, a provider of systems engineering services. While working he attended and graduated from George Washington University. He always maintained a connection to the Jersey Shore area, acquiring with Joanne the Old Bailey House, a historic house and residing there full-time beginning in the mid-1980s.

His industry accomplishments included being a founding member and former president of the Marine Technology Society. He was also appointed by the governor of Virginia to serve at the chairman of the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences.

He believed in community service and served for years on the board of the Jersey Shore Hospital as well as the Jersey Shore Regional Library. He was an active member of the Jersey Shore Lions Club and enjoyed supporting a number of charitable endeavors.

Gil was gifted with a green thumb and delighted in sharing the fruits of his garden with friends, neighbors and the community at large. He could often be found during the day in the garden and at night he relished sitting on the front porch entertaining those who dropped by and telling stories.

He is survived by his two sisters, Simone Merritt and Denise Siboroski, both of Florida; three sons, Hollis Maton of Brunswick, Georgia, Charles Maton and his wife Lynette Maton of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Courtenay Maton and his wife Patty Maton of Springfield, Virginia; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and his close friend Doris Cook. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Joanne Thompson Maton; two brothers, John and Pierre Maton; and daughter Matille Maton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jersey Shore Public Library or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, where a viewing will be held on Friday, Jan. 19 between 5-7. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2018, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 176 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Jersey Shore.

Burial will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
