Ira L. Carpenter
Ira L. “Joe” Carpenter, 90, of Coudersport Pike, Lock Haven, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2018 at Haven Skilled Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility after a brief illness.
Born August 5, 1927, he was the youngest son of the late Walter Scott and Caroline (Poorman) Carpenter.
On Sept. 15, 1947 in Elkton, Md., he married the former Nancy Catherine Keiffer who preceded him in death on September 17, 2017.
Ira and Nancy shared 70 loving years of marriage, living in the Lock Haven area most of that time, and in Berwick for seven years. They enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and spent several months a year in Florida and Hatteras Island, N.C. after retirement.
Ira attended the Lock Haven High School, leaving in his senior year to join the Navy during World War II. He spent his naval career in the Seabees in the South Pacific Theatre as an electrical apprentice. Upon his discharge, he went to work in 1949 at the former Pennsylvania Power and Light Company, now PPL Electric Utilities, where he held numerous positions starting as a meter reader, to lineman, chief lineman, crew chief and systems analysist before retiring in 1989 as a residential consultant.
He enjoyed reading, helping Nancy with her gardens, and spending time in his workshop where he created beautiful woodwork projects, rocking horses, and outdoor Adirondack furniture.
He was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ and a former member of Lock Haven Golden K.
Ira is survived by two daughters, Judy Elaine (Ken) Baker of South Williamsport and Jo Anne LaRocque of Flemington; one granddaughter, Jacquelyn Elaine Baker of Oval; numerous nieces and nephews; four step-grandchildren, and 12 great step-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Ira was preceded in death by two infant daughters; two brothers, William and Nevin; three sisters: Evelyn White, Vivian Corter, and Ethel Goebert; and his son-in-law, Paul M. LaRocque, Sr.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington.
The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Rick Conklin officiating. Interment will follow at Swissdale Cemetery.
