Charles ‘Son’ Sample with wife Sally

Charles “Son” Sample died Thursday, May 24, 2018 from a stroke. In hospice care for a week, he died peacefully in his sleep.

He leaves his wife, Sally; his sons, Loren Sample and Jim Sample; his daughter, Christy LaForce; his grandchildren, Christy, Kerie, Sara, Christopher, Gregory, and Kathleen; and five great-grandchildren.

Son was born in Pittsburgh on Aug. 27, 1919. He attended the University of Pittsburgh until he was drafted to pitch for the Detroit Tigers in 1939 and played for their farm team until a knee injury ended his career.

He married Sally Hezlep and moved with his family to West Virginia where he and his brother, Don, continued the family gas business.

The family then moved to Lock Haven, and finally to Mackeyville.

Son was considered a pioneer in the Pennsylvania gas and oil business until his retirement in 1986.

Long known for his sense of humor and open door, he loved to host family and friends at his home. Son was an avid gardener and fisherman. He believed that supporting and nurturing the family connections was a sacred duty. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sorely missed.

A private wake will be held at a future time for family and friends at his home in Mackeyville.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington.
