Elsie F. Hamilton
Elsie F. Hamilton, 89, formerly of Woolrich, Pa. died May 15, 2019 at the Hillside Senior Living Community in Williamsport. While at Hillside, Elsie experienced love and care as if she were a family member, and we are grateful to all of her caregivers there.
Born Jan. 16, 1930, in Newport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles D. Henry, Sr. and Elsie (Hutzley) Henry. On July 5, 1952, she married the late James R. Hamilton, Sr., and they shared 57 years of marriage until his death in 2009.
Elsie was a 1948 graduate of Mehoopany High School. She studied graphic arts at Edinboro State Teachers College, where she met her future husband. While her children were young, Elsie was an at-home seamstress for years. After she and her family moved to Clinton County, she worked at Bobbie Brooks and then at the Woolrich Store for a number of years in the fabric department. There she was a valuable resource to local seamstresses with her vast knowledge of all things sewing-related. She could indeed create masterpieces in fabric. Elsie was also a juried craftsperson, a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, serving as treasurer of the Williamsport chapter. She was an artisan of cut and pierced lampshades, selling at various arts festivals across the state.
Elsie enjoyed traveling, especially adventurous cruises throughout the world. She also cherished her time with friends in different organizations including the Lock Haven Red Hat Society, Senior Circle, Knotty Knitters and Lock Haven University Dames Crafts, and the Lock Haven Cosmopolitan Club in Lock Haven. Words that could describe the way Elsie lived are generous, frank and artistic. She could see beauty even in mundane things. She loved her family and spending time with them, and we hope she will be remembered for her spirited outlook that influenced most of her life.
Surviving are Elsie’s four children: James R. Hamilton (Georgianne) of Linden; Charles S. Hamilton (Dianne) of Windsor, Colorado; Janice F. Saffel (Charles) of Williamsport; and Mary E. Vuccola (Richard Bennett) of Jersey Shore. She is survived also by eight grandchildren: Benjamin Toner, Stephen Toner, Matthew Hamilton, Emily Leidhecker, Todd Marconi, Elizabeth McKay, Jenna Marconi, and James Hamilton, as well as five great-grandchildren: Isaac Toner, Themis Leidhecker, Greyson Toner, Artemis Leidhecker, and Alice McKay. In addition, Elsie is survived by a sister, Katherine A. Dymond of Tunkhannock, Pa.
Besides her husband and parents, Elsie was predeceased by her siblings Clara Mae Witter, Betty Lou Furman, Charles D. Henry, Jr., Carl Henry, Ruth Comfort, and Walter Dale Henry.
