School counselors take important tour

Almost 40 local school counselors recently attended a tour of area businesses.

It may be among the most important things they do this school year.

School counselors, by definition, are responsible for helping students plan careers after high school.

Over the past four decades, the public perception has grown that the counselors are almost exclusively charged with helping students plan college careers.

But these days, as much as ever before, what happens after high school may not be college. In fact, for many students, if it is college it might be the wrong path.

In these days of competitive job searching, it is more vital than ever that students realize that a four-year college degree is not the only path to success.

The counselors toured Textron Lycoming, Kellogg’s, Advanced Drainage Systems, Halliburton, Wirerope, PMF Industries and Frito-Lay.

They observed jobs that may require a four-year college degree. But they also observed jobs that are there for someone just out of high school.

Some manufacturers have aging work forces and the opening may be there.

But they will go to those who are prepared to be successful in the work force.

That means mastering a skill, having a work ethic, being well-versed in team building, and being someone with leadership capabilities. That means resume making, knowing how to handle a job interview and assess and define career interests.

As one counselor pointed out, “We want the kids to know there’s opportunities other than a four-year degree and they’re right here. They don’t have to move out. There’s so many jobs in our area.”

There are plenty of correct paths after high school. We hope the counselors learned even more about how to put their students on them.
