Enjoying the beauty of God’s creation

As I sit here in The Express office at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning watching the snow continue to fall, I’m in awe at the lack of life in our normally bustling little town.

But for the plow trucks passing by every couple of hours, traffic is at a standstill.

The sidewalks are pretty much unscathed, not even a footprint to mar the pretty white stuff that was nearly knee deep as I made my way into the office.

The post office next door is closed, and the constant parade of visitors in and out is non-existent.

Even The Express is closed, with just a few die-hard editorial staffers here to get the news ready for tomorrow’s edition.

Our photographer was out early this morning, capturing the beauty and stillness of the fresh snowfall and looking for some signs of life.

He found just a few.

One of them was an Express carrier who was out delivering our newspaper to the delight of his customers on West Main Street. He chuckled when asked how he was coping with the deep snow and continued on his way.

A little farther down the street, the photographer caught Lock Haven University staff clearing the sidewalks with snow blowers, and downtown, a man walked slowly up the street, perhaps admiring the beauty and fresh smell of the falling snow.

There were no residents scurrying to their cars to make their way to work for the day.

There were no children waiting for school buses.

There weren’t even any dog-walkers out for an early morning trek as they are each day.

On this day, there is a stillness, a calmness, a peacefulness, rarely seen in this world where everyone seems to be in a hurry all the time.

I know it won’t last for long, but on this morning, it was a welcome change of pace.

It was a time to reflect on the wonders of God’s creation…

And enjoy the beauty of His glistening masterpiece.
