Kirmess Baby Parade in Renovo

This postcard, provided by Charles Barnum, shows Renovo’s first Kirmess Baby Parade, held June 16, 1908. Babies Geraldine Taylor and Charles Molson won first prizes in the contest which was open to any child not over 3 years of age. The newspaper of the day stated, “Bring the babies, big and little. All are wanted and all are welcome.” The term Kirmess could mean any annual outdoor fair, usually for charity, and could relate to the anniversary of the founding of a church or parish. The parade and contest might have been related to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Renovo, but the postcard does not give that information.
