The gift

Barack Obama was elected President in 2008 and was backed by a Democratic House and Senate, but instead of giving America generations of Democratic rule, he alienated both friends and foes from the start. First the Affordable Care Act was rammed through without a single Republican vote and he prevaricated and lied about its costs and savings.

Essentially doubling the national debt followed. Racial polarization was ensured instead of bringing us all together.

Apologies for America abroad, along with other foreign policy failures, was a turn-off for most Americans.

By the election of 2016, the Obama administration proved to be a great gift to Republicans and now President-elect Donald Trump.

What is yet to be determined is whether Trump can make the Republican Party a unified governing entity for generations to come. A Republican House and Senate, along with Republican majorities in most states, will give the party an outstanding opportunity to do just that.

And by the way, government is often criticized for not being good at anything it does, but there are two areas where it excels: Subsidized incompetence and black-hole accounting.
