Vote ‘no’ on property tax amendment

PAMELA DILLETT

On the upcoming Nov. 7 General Election ballot (you are indeed planning to vote, of course), there is an important question called the “Homestead Exemption Amendment.”

The wording you’ll see implies that if you vote “yes” you won’t have to pay property taxes anymore.

Sounds great, doesn’t it?

Who wants to pay property taxes?

But this proposal is misleading and very possibly false.

These taxes fund our public schools, prisons and courts.

Where’s that money going to come from if property taxes are eliminated?

Oh, wait, the state has some solutions in mind: 1) It might increase your Pennsylvania income tax by as much as 60 percent; 2) You may start paying taxes on products and services that are now tax-free, such as food, for example; 3) The Pennsylvania sales tax you pay on most items you buy will be increased from 6 percent to 7 percent.

This means you will likely end up paying even higher taxes, especially burdensome on low-income renters.

Protect what little money you have by voting NO to the Homestead Exemption Amendment.
