Don’t be fooled

DAPHNE NACHMINOVITCH

Norfolk, Va.

Don’t be tricked by the Oct. 31 letter to the editor written by Will Coggin and his mask of “concern.” He represents a front group for Outback Steakhouse, KFC, Philip Morris and other enterprises that subject billions of animals to miserable lives and violent, painful deaths every year.

This group fears PETA’s (People Against the Unethical Treatment of Animals) impact in educating people about the meat industry’s cruelty and changing consumers’ buying habits, so it responds with desperate attempts to mislead people about PETA’s work to help animals in our community. PETA is a “shelter of last resort” for animals who need euthanasia to end their suffering, including those whose guardians can’t afford this vital service at a veterinary clinic.

We welcome all animals without fees, waiting lists, appointments, or other restrictions, and we help many animals whom facilities with limited-admission policies often reject, including dogs who have become aggressive from being chained or penned outdoors 24/7, those who are dying from untreated injuries and diseases, feral cats ravaged by having to struggle for survival on the streets, and many others for whom euthanasia is the kindest option.

We’ve also helped thousands of families keep their animals, by providing free veterinary care, food, and other services, and we’ve found wonderful homes for many animals ourselves. Please visit www.PETASaves.com to learn more.

(Daphna Nachminovitch is PETA’s senior vice president, Cruelty Investigations Department.)
