Offended and confused

MEGAN LEAB

Williamsport

Recently I was reading through your newspaper and I was deeply offended and confused.

Ida Temple wrote a letter published Feb. 2 and titled, “Death to American babies.”

I thought Christians were supposed to love all people and not judge them for their actions.

I also thought the Constitution included the separation of church and state. This letter was very judgmental and, in many ways hurtful. I understand that her religious teaching does not support abortion, however, that does not mean that you need to preach a revolt against others who do not share your beliefs.

It was my understanding that “Christians” are supposed to strive to be “Christ-like” and accept differences, educate others and not condemn those who are different.

The Constitution is a very important document in guiding our nation’s laws. The 1st Amendment of this document states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …”

Therefore, so far as I’m concerned, it would be unconstitutional for our government to decide that abortion is illegal because your religious text states that it is immoral.

I personally do not wish to condemn this writer for her thoughts or make her feel ashamed. I simply just want to ensure that readers are educated and can see both sides of the story. For some, abortion may be medically necessary, or the best option for that particular person. I fully support safe and legal abortions, and the government officials who keep these options available.
