Meaningless Meanderings
POSTED:Fri, December 21, 2007 @ 10:43AM
Merry times? The holiday has arrived. Bright lights fill homes and cover the streets. People are kind and civil and. . .Well, maybe not. What does the "Spirit of the Season" mean exactly? Does it really take a special event or holiday to bring people together for any reason? Why must a family wait until this one time of year to be kind, say "I love you," or go out of their way to help one another? Perhaps I am a bit jaded about the holidays. I'm always hearing about this "spirit of the season," tied with the "kindness of men," yet I hear of assaults and theft throughout this month as people try to find that perfect gift that needs to be in that special someone's hands for Christmas and no other time. I could speak out against our commercialized society, or the lack of "roots" with the meaning of the holiday. I could stand and gripe about religions and the impact of the other holidays which are ignored by widespread Christianity. If I so chose, I could take the route of speaking about how "perfect" the holiday is. But I won't. Pause for a moment and think of the holiday season. What does it mean to you? Does that make it the true meaning of the holiday? Perhaps its relative, or perhaps there is a true answer. Until we stop and think about it, we can't reach an answer. So, until then, I wish you all a happy holiday season, whether you celebrate Christmas, Winter Solstice, Kwanza, or Chanukah. Spend it the "right" way, whatever that may be.
