Campus Life

POSTED:Tue, February 26, 2008 @ 7:05PM

Random.

Life has this funny way of always keeping us on our toes—even as a college student. As a student we have to learn to juggle friends, family, homework, work, group meetings and athletics. Everything just seemed to always fall in place and for the most part, for my friends and I we haven’t had any problems with this juggling act. One thing we have become professionals at is knowing how to pick one another up, or to pick up slack when others have a lot on their plate. It is just something that we do.

Recently my friends and I had to pull each other at the same time because of something that happened. One of our good friends found out last week that he was in need of surgery because there was a tumor the size of a baseball growing on the inside of his ear, which in turn has been pushing on his brain for the past five years. What made matters worse was that he is all the way in California (he moved there after graduation do to a job offer).

Yesterday was his operation. With him in California and all of us on the East Coast, it was a waiting game. Everybody patiently awaited any sliver of news that would be passed on amongst friends. It is safe to say that we never felt that California was so far away. I always have known that technology was a great part of our lives, but I never really realized the importance of it until that was the sole basis of communication with the West coast.

It is one of those things that is crazy to me. I sometimes find myself thinking that life only exists around me because I am only able to witness what is happening where I am—almost like everything else just freezes but when I get to see or take part in it, life does a quick fast forward and gets up to date. (That wasn’t meant to be a conceited thought, so please don’t take it that way).

So as I continue on with my daily life, I will keep him in my thoughts and pray that all is going well for him—remembering to send the phone call to just say hello, or to send cards like the one that is currently in the mail. It is the little things that mean the most, especially when you least expect them because they can truly bring a smile to your face just knowing that your friends care; that you aren’t forgotten. That is one thing about all of my friends here at college, we don’t forget anything and are always here for one another. We are family and they will always be in my juggling act.
