Change The World

Change the World

“You can change the world; at least that’s what they all say.

But its something I contemplate each and everyday.

Stop the fighting, clothe the poor,

feed the needy, and pray for a cure.

Believe in others and have a little faith.

Trust your instincts, and always have a smile upon your face.”

That is just a little excerpt from a poem I have been working on. Everyday we have to hear about the negative things that are going on—that is because if it is negative then it is easier to have different viewpoints upon events. It is rare to turn on the television, or to pick up a newspaper and not see something negative making headlines. On what is a rare occasion in our apartment, my roommates and I turned on the television to just see what was on.

Then we came upon a show that made me roll my eyes in disgust. There is this new show called “The Big Give” which was created by Oprah Winfrey. Basically it is a competition where a group of strangers compete to be the “Biggest Giver.” How do you become the biggest giver? Well it is simple, to raise the most money for a cause in a local neighborhood.

Now I am a competitive person but why does everything have to be a competition especially when it is for making a change in the world? You shouldn’t have to go onto a reality television show just to show people that you are a compassionate human being who is trying to make a difference in a world that, at times, has more wrongs than rights. I think that is a problem in this day and age. People just want to get their 15 minutes of fame and will do whatever possible to make it known to others that they are out in the communities trying to make a difference. I am all for making a difference but there is a right way and a wrong way to do so. Instead of Oprah pumping all this money into a television show, and giving the winner one million dollars, why doesn’t she take that money and make a difference here in America. Why not give it to programs that are trying to make a difference simply because they want to not because it is a game.

On April 5th 2008, my Ultimate Frisbee team (The Hucking Hillbillies) and I will be hosting a tournament here in Lock Haven at The Foundation Fields. It is here that we will be donating proceeds from this tournament to the Clinton County Chapter of The Second Mile. The Hucking Hillbillies primarily consists of young adults who are in the education field, or whom have worked with children through programs such as The Second Mile. With our donation we hope to be able to assist The Second Mile with their continuing efforts to care for the children in our area. Then, on Sunday April 6th,we will be volunteering our time at a Second Mile Event.

We know that it may not be much but it is our way of giving back to a community that welcomes us for nine months out of the year. We aren’t competing to be the biggest giver, nor do we want anything in return. We are simply doing it because we care.
