Campus Life

Peace?

I am currently reading “Four Spirits” for one of my classes. It is a novel about the Birmingham church bombings where four innocent African America girls were killed while attending Church Services. The bombing was a result of protests and other events that were being led by African Americans.

When I got to the section in the novel about the actual church bombing, I couldn’t help but question some things in relation to today’s war we are fighting over seas and even some acts that are performed here in the United States.

People are supposed to be safe everywhere, especially while they are in a church; the government has even said this. Well then why is it that there have been countless civilian deaths over in Iraq because of a failure to have the right information? Odds are that we have bombed churches, sanctuaries, temples etc over seas, killing innocent human life.

We are constantly after people all over the world to keep the peace and to stop the violence, but we aren't doing anything to show them how to stop it all. We are out there fighting, killing and injuring a countless number of people. We are deploying more soldiers to fight a cause that seems never ending, instead of pulling troops out. If we want the rest of the world to practice peace, we have to show them how to do so.

Just like back in the day of the Birmingham bombings, and the Civil Rights Movement, we have to take action. We have to show people what is right and what is wrong. Maybe if we can work together with those who are different than us, we will have a more peaceful world.
