Campus Life

POSTED:Thu, April 3, 2008 @ 11:02PM

History in process

You can see it all over campus. Students are wearing “Hillary for President” buttons, while others are wearing ones that read “Obama for President”. It is a topic that doesn’t take much time to spark a good debate where personal opinions, thoughts adopted from other people, as well as facts (accurate on some accounts, not accurate on others).

For a minute, let’s put aside any conflicting views, forgetting about what each candidate is promising. Let’s even forget about their pasts. With all of that aside, take a step back and look at each individual.

On one side we have a multiracial male, born in Honolulu Hawaii. On the otherside we have a white woman who was born in Scranton Pennsylvania. No matter what way you look at it, it is history  in the making. Both Democratic nominations differ from the standard white, male who was born with a “silver spoon” in hand. They both are on a mission to make a change in the United States. They hope to be able to put our country back on track and begin to pull troops out of Iraq.

As children and young adults we are forced into reading about events in history. We had to memorize dates, battles, and what Generals were from what war. Looking back upon it now, we never fully understood why it was we were learning about those events. Part of that reason was because we weren’t there to be first hand witnesses to what was occurring. That is why right now, there is history in the making.

It doesn’t matter if Hillary Clinton is able to regain the lead, or if Barrack Obama can hold the lead. There will be a change in the Democratic party with either of these candidates. So instead of looking at this as a black and white issue, and as a male versus female issue, instead listen to what each candidate is all about—making sure that America gets back on track.
