Campus Life

POSTED:Tue, December 11, 2007 @ 5:22PM

Traditions live on

It’s another typical day in my life as a college student at Lock Haven University. I woke up at seven and made my way to campus at eight. I live off campus, so in  past two years I have finally begun to realize all that there is to do on the  continuously growing campus. My day consists of going to classes doing homework, and playing ultimate Frisbee.

When I asked my friend Mike about what he likes most about campus life, he said the socialization aspect. When I asked him why he simply just said “you know Kerin, campus life is like it’s own little world.” It’s own little eh? I never thought about it that way.  After finishing my conversation with Mr. Michael, I sat in the newly opened Starbucks and just pondered this idea of it’s own little world. Lock Haven University is continually growing, yet it still has it’s small persona where everybody knows everybody through somebody else. I think some of the best things that LHU has to offer are the opportunities to meet new people. It seems as though at least twice a week there is a campus wide event; such as free movie showings, and comedy nights where people get the chance to meet others with the same interests. Another great a thing is the abundance of clubs that exist on campus; one hundred and twenty five to be exact that the University actually funds.

I am a member of LHU’s co-ed Ultimate Frisbee team. We get the opportunity to play five times a week when the weather cooperates and we also are able to go to tournaments thanks to the budget we are given. This past fall we went to three tournaments where we got to make new friends from other schools, meet up with friends from home, and bond as a team. Like other things on campus, tradition is a big part of our club. Our name “The Hucking Hillbillies” was past on from our former President Shawn Pickering, who still is able to make the drive from State College to coach us. He doesn’t get paid anything, he does it because Ultimate Frisbee is a huge part of his life. The friends he has made from here are some that will surely last him a life time and the knowledge he possess of the sport has helped us to have our best semester of Ultimate yet ( we have placed in the top 5 in each of our last 3 tournaments).

The friends I have made from being a “Hillbillie” are a big part of my campus life. Through the writing papers, doing homework, going to class, and going to meetings, they have kept me sane. We have a Thursday night get together where some of our teammates and friends come over to play the hang out game. The hang out game is alcohol free and we just sit around, talk, watch a movie, and all things usually lead to a sing a long; sometimes I feel as though the life I live is a musical these nights because almost everything that is said has the opportunity to be the starting point to the break out of a song. It is during these nights that I realize how great Lock Haven has been to me. It has given me a campus where I feel safe, where endless opportunities are only a step away and it has given me friends that live all the way from California to Connecticut. It has given me friends whom I can count on for anything.

lockhaven.com blogger Hello. My name is Kerin Coyne. I am originally from good old Scranton Pa, where I live with my family; but now reside in Lock Haven where I live with three of my best friends. In my spare time from school, I love to play Ultimate Frisbee, hang out with friends, and write. Some of my favorite quotes are "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do --Ernest Hemingway" "dream as though you'll live forever.. live as though you'll die today" --James Dean "Serendipity--A fortunate Accident"
