The big day has arrived! The Renovo area is celebrating the 60th annual Flaming Foliage Festival this weekend with a huge list of activities. The queen contestants arrived yesterday afternoon and were given the opportunity to share some words with one another as they worked their way through registration, held at the K&L Auto Sales showroom. In the photo, FFF co-chairperson Maria Gentzyell, third from the right, and FFF Hostess Alicia Shearer, left of Gentzyel, prepare some of the contestants for the rest of the registration process.

Literary Love Affairs
Wed, May 28, 2008 @ 5:03PM
Reading one book often turns into reading several more, in my case. Often I will pick up a book on recommendation from a friend or because it catches my eye in the bookstore, and then I fall in love with the author. Some of the authors I've fallen in love with in the past include Jodi Picoult, Ian McEwan, Ann Brashares, and Jhumpa Lahiri. When you find a book that satisfies your every reading desire, it only makes you want more, and the most logical place to look is in other books written by the same person. Well, my latest literary love affair is with British writer Nick Hornby. A few of Hornby's novels have been turned into popular films, including High Fidelity with John Cusack, Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, and About a Boy with Hugh Grant. I picked up the novel version of About a Boy while I was studying abroad in England last week. I have always wanted to read this book, but I just never seemed to get around to it.

Summer Time
Wed, May 14, 2008 @ 1:20PM
Forgive me for my lack of writing the past two weeks. It was the end of the semester, schedules got crazy, and packing for summer became a chore. With summer break now here, I will not be living with my friends in our apartment, I am at home in Scranton. What does that mean? That means that I will try to keep up with the theme of college life (also campus life) but I may stray from it a bit at times.

A Legacy
Thu, May 1, 2008 @ 3:36PM
When time becomes short, humans find the time to pass things to the next generation. Grandmothers leave money to their grandchildren while father's leave tools to their children, both hoping that the meager gift they give will change the future of the recipient. This idea is not only confined to death. Neighbors give partings gifts of furniture, former lovers give one last gift in hopes of repairing what was lost, an students pass books to the next generation of the potentially educated. The idea that objects and knowledge should be passed on is not uncommon, but the event that causes a legacy to be passed on can be rather strange. I have been a student of Lock Haven University for five years. In those five years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, received the gift of inspiration, garnered a collection of books, and found insight into my life.

The Symphonic Pink Floyd
Sun, October 12, 2008 @ 7:15PM
Are you a classical music fan? Do you also like classic rock? The London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Peter Scholes and arranged by Killing Joke member Jaz Coleman, took aim at covering selected Pink Floyd tunes from the albums Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall on the 1995-released CD titled Us and Them: The Symphonic Pink Floyd. Both Scholes and Coleman teamed together to also cover Led Zeppelin classics on another release entitled Kashmir, also in 1995.
