AG agent delivers strong message for kids

MILL HALL — Christina Long had a strong story to tell the sixth-graders at Central Mountain Middle School Tuesday — Unfortunately she was sexually assaulted and strangled to death by an Internet predator before she got the chance.
Craig S. LeCadre, a special agent for the Office of Attorney General, offered Christina’s story in her stead.
It was a cautionary tale, delivered to youngsters who are sophisticated in the ways of technology, but not so sophisticated when it comes to its dangers.

Reading one book often turns into reading several more, in my case. Often I will pick up a book on recommendation from a friend or because it catches my eye in the bookstore, and then I fall in love with the author. Some of the authors I've fallen in love with in the past include Jodi Picoult, Ian McEwan, Ann Brashares, and Jhumpa Lahiri. When you find a book that satisfies your every reading desire, it only makes you want more, and the most logical place to look is in other books written by the same person. Well, my latest literary love affair is with British writer Nick Hornby. A few of Hornby's novels have been turned into popular films, including High Fidelity with John Cusack, Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, and About a Boy with Hugh Grant. I picked up the novel version of About a Boy while I was studying abroad in England last week. I have always wanted to read this book, but I just never seemed to get around to it.

Summer Time

Forgive me for my lack of writing the past two weeks. It was the end of the semester, schedules got crazy, and packing for summer became a chore. With summer break now here, I will not be living with my friends in our apartment, I am at home in Scranton. What does that mean? That means that I will try to keep up with the theme of college life (also campus life) but I may stray from it a bit at times.

A Legacy

When time becomes short, humans find the time to pass things to the next generation. Grandmothers leave money to their grandchildren while father's leave tools to their children, both hoping that the meager gift they give will change the future of the recipient. This idea is not only confined to death. Neighbors give partings gifts of furniture, former lovers give one last gift in hopes of repairing what was lost, an students pass books to the next generation of the potentially educated. The idea that objects and knowledge should be passed on is not uncommon, but the event that causes a legacy to be passed on can be rather strange. I have been a student of Lock Haven University for five years. In those five years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, received the gift of inspiration, garnered a collection of books, and found insight into my life.

War Dance is a documentary based on the stories of three children who are in the Acholi tribe in Uganda, Africa. They are living in one of the most dangerous refugee camps in the country, displaced due to the Lord’s Resistance Army, or “rebels,” a terrorist group that kidnaps children and turns them into soldiers. The cameras follow the children as they prepare for the National Music Competition, where they will compete with over 20,000 schools to be the champions.
