Gas drive-offs and siphoning remain constant
LOCK HAVEN — Every cloud has a silver lining, right?
Amidst widespread despair over out-of-control fuel price hikes, there seems to be one area of the economy that hasn’t been drastically affected. Gas drive-offs and siphoning incidents haven’t increased or decreased, according to several local police departments.
“I was rather surprised to find we’ve had half as many (drive-offs) this year as last year,” Cpl. Brian Diffenbaugh, of the Pennsylvania State Police at Lamar, said.
His station responded to only 15 drive-offs in the first three months of 2008, compared to 30 in that same time period in 2007. The majority of those thefts occured in Bald Eagle and Porter Townships, where most of the gas stations are in the Lamar station’s coverage area.
