LHU football falls to Mercyhurst

ERIE - The Lock Haven University football team (0-6, 0-3 PSAC West) lost to Mercyhurst University (4-2, 3-0 PSAC West) 49-14 Saturday in Erie.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools, and with the win Mercyhurst extends its win streak to three games.

Trailing 14-0 early in the second half, the Bald Eagles cut the deficit to a touchdown after Ibrahim Smith scored on a 5-yard reception.

Smith's touchdown capped off an 11 play, 68-yard drive that started in the opening quarter. The touchdown cut the MU lead to 14-7.

MU went on to score two touchdowns in the second quarter following Smith's strike.

DeMarr Dowell scored LHU's second touchdown after catching a pass from six yards out.

Dowell's touchdown capped off an impressive 10-play drive that saw the Bald Eagles march 82 yards down the field.

Freshman Jarryd Burkett was impressive under center Saturday for LHU and enjoyed the best outing of his young career.

Along with his two touchdown passes, he was 15-for-24 with no interceptions. He passed for 118 yards, sparking the Haven attack.

Dowell had five catches for 51 yards to go along with his third quarter TD.

Colden Carroll led LHU on the ground with 26 yards on five carries.

Defensively, LHU was led by Dean Tortorice, who had a game-high 15 tackles. He made six solo stops in the loss. Wes Plummer made 11 tackles for LHU.

Lady Eagles fall to No. 14 Penn State

LOCK HAVEN - The Lock Haven University field hockey team (10-3) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting No. 14 Penn State University (7-4) Sunday on LHU's Charlotte Smith Field.

Freshman Kaitlyn Smyth scored the Lady Eagles' only goal, marking the first of her Haven career. Sophomore goalie Erin Terreson made two saves in the cage for LHU.

Lock Haven was down 1-0 halftime despite tremendous pressure to start the contest. The Lady Eagles quickly took control of the match and dominated possession in the early going.

It looked as if LHU's early pressure was going to pay off as the Lady Eagles almost went up 1-0 after Casey Hughes drilled a shot on goal off of a penalty corner. PSU goalie Jen Beaumont was up to the task, making the first of her four saves in the game.

Lady Eagles go 1-1 in Erie

ERIE - The Lock Haven University volleyball team (19-4) went 1-1 Saturday at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action.

Lock Haven kicked off the day with its 19th win of the season, downing Clarion University 3-1.

Lock Haven fell in itssecond match of the day, 3-1, to host Edinboro University.

Scores from the match were 25-17, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-22.

Leading way for LHU was Christie Naumann who had a team-high 13 kills. Juliana Nascimento hit .304 with eight kills.

Haven harriers impressive at SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK - The Lock Haven University men's and women's cross country teams both turned in a solid outings Saturday at the Pre-National meet hosted by Slippery Rock University, the host institution of the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships.

The No. 20 Bald Eagles took second overall in the team race behind only UC San Deigo, who is ranked No. 4 in the Western Region. San Deigo won with 52 points, topping the 22-team field.

Lock Haven racked up 69 points and was followed by Wayne State (91).

The Lady Eagles took ninth out of 29 teams.

Bald Eagles down rival Bloomsburg

LOCK HAVEN - The Lock Haven University men's soccer team (7-4-2) downed Bloomsburg University (4-4-4) 3-1 Saturday at Hubert Jack Stadium.

The Bald Eagles got an all-around solid outing from up and down the roster, but it was a two-goal performance from Martin Pletz that paved the way for the Haven.

Lock Haven's third goal of the match came from freshman William Pasukinis.

The first of Pletz's two goals came early, much to the delight of LHU head coach Doug Moore and the home faithful.
