These students from the Central Mountain Middle School art classes of Roseanne Wilt delivered up the love and caring to some special youngsters - along with these "Jared Boxes." A Jared Box is a small storage box filled with gifts, toys, cards and games, which are given to chronically ill children to provide a special diversion as they receive chemotherapy or other medical treatments. In this case, the boxes were designed as gifts for middle school aged children receiving treatment at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. The gifts were put together and delivered with the assistance of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an educational association. The boxes were inspired by Jared, a brave little boy who battled cancer, and who carried a backpack full of toys and games to all his appointments, and who wondered why the other children didn't bring toys to their exam rooms. Jared's battle ended Nov. 12, 2000, but his inspiration lives on.

Keystone STARS is a continuous quality improvement program and rating system for early learning and school-age programs in Pennsylvania. Keystone STARS has been proven in a study by the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State to improve the quality of child care across the state and has reversed a 10-year trend of declining quality in child care.
Keystone STARS provides families with a tool to gauge the quality of early learning programs from STAR 1 to STAR 4. As programs earn higher STARS ratings, they are improving the quality of the early education each child receives.
