Bonomo steps down as wrestling coach
By TOM FOX - tfox@lockhaven.comLOCK HAVEN - Lock Haven University head coach Rocky Bonomo has stepped down as leader of the wrestling program.
The university's public relations department confirmed over the weekend that Bonomo has retired from Lock Haven University.
When contacted, Bonomo said he was advised not to comment on the situation at this time.
The Bald Eagles do still have associate head coach Robbie Waller on staff. Decorated NCAA wrestler Teyon Ware is also a volunteer assistant in the program.
No time frame has been given as to when a new head coach would be named by the university.
The former head coach led the wrestling program for six seasons and garnered a record of 45-56 over his time at The Haven. He was the ninth head coach in LHU's history.
He had come under fire in the last several seasons as the wrestling program had been on the decline. Last season, the university sent one wrestler to nationals, Matt Fittery, and finished with a losing season. In fact, the only wins came against Bucknell, Millersville, Clarion and Cleveland State.
An announcement came earlier in this year that the university wasn't going to renew Bonomo's contract when it expired in two years.
Bonomo had been associated with LHU wrestling for 17 seasons, and was about to begin his seventh season as head coach. He was an assistant coach for the program prior to being named leader of the Bald Eagles.
He came to Lock Haven in 1990 from Bucknell where he served in development and evaluation to coordination of the entire wrestling program.
Bonomo's best year at the school was in 2004-2005 where he had 10 Eastern Wrestling League place-winners, two league champions, two PSAC champions and a total of six NCAA qualifiers.
He was also named 2005 Eastern Wrestling League Coach of the Year.
The former head coach is a 1987 graduate of Bloomsburg University, and was an outstanding wrestler. He was a two-time NCAA All-American and a three-time EWL and PSAC champ. He was inducted in the Bloomsburg Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Luzerne County Hall of Fame in 2005.
LHU begins its season at the Brute Binghamton Open on Nov. 15 before hosting Rider University at Bellefonte High School on Nov. 20.
