Local furniture and wood craftsman Tom Svec shows a slide at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Lock Haven, picturing one of the pieces cut from a historic elm tree that had stood in front of Penn State’s Old Main. He told the club members he has monitored the tree’s situation. It was planted in the late 1800s and unfortunately had to be felled due to disease. Svec noted that Penn State intends to use the good wood left from it to commission for furniture, for or by alumni. Elm yellows, a disease that has already claimed many American elms on the University Park campus, forced the tree’s removal. Svec’s own hand-craftsmanship is nationally recognized. Tom Svec Furniture Design can be found at www.tomsvec furniture.com, and his workshop and studio are on Great Island, just outside Lock Haven.
