Two CM teams win reading competitions

MILL HALL - On April 14, Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 hosted the 13th Annual Middle School Interscholastic Reading Competition at Central Mountain Middle School.

This scholastic quiz competition is open to teams of sixth, seventh and eighth graders in the CIU No. 10 service area which covers Clinton, Centre and Clearfield counties. Public, non-public and charter schools are all eligible to participate.

The grand prize winning team was the Book Bouncers, coached by Julie Proctor, Zoe Keeler and Kim Bailey of Central Mountain Middle School. Of the 12 participating teams, six teams qualified for trophy honors. In addition to the grand prize, teams from Keystone Central won three first-place trophies. Bald Eagle won one first-place trophy. Sugar Valley Rural Charter School won a third-place trophy. Scoring is based on a total accumulated points from three rounds of competition.

In addition, teams from Bellefonte Area, Glendale, Penns Valley Area and Philipsburg-Osceola also participated.

According to Deb Wakefield, competition co-coordinator, the Central Intermediate Unit No. 10, 118 students participated from the tri-county region. The reading list for the competition includes 40 titles and is distributed before the end of each school year. This allows students to begin reading the books over the summer months, which encourages reading 12 months a year.

Next year's event is scheduled for early spring at a school to be determined at a later date.

Also, On March 31, 2012, CIU No. 10 hosted the 13th Annual Elementary Interscholastic Reading Competition on March 31 at Wingate Elementary/Bald Eagle Area High School.

This scholastic quiz competition is open to teams of fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the CIU No. 10 service area which covers Clinton, Centre and Clearfield counties. Public, non-public and charter schools are all eligible to participate.

The grand prize winning team was the Woodward Wolves, coached by Bobbie Daniels, Woodward Elementary School, Keystone Central School District. Of the 38 participating teams, 25 qualified for trophy honors. In addition to the grand prize, teams from Keystone Central won one first-place trophy and three second-place trophies. Bald Eagle Area teams won one first-place and three second-place trophies. Bellefonte Area teams won four first-place, two second-place and four third-place trophies. Our Lady of Victory School in State College won one first-place and one third-place trophy. St. John the Evangelist School in Bellefonte won a second-place trophy. Penns Valley won a second-place and a third-place trophy.

In addition, teams from Curwensville Area, Glendale, Harmony Area, Moshannon Valley and Sugar Valley Rural Charter School also participated in the event.
