STATE COLLEGE - Geisinger Health System has broken ground for a parking deck in the rear of Geisinger-Gray's Woods, signaling the start of construction for the facility's second phase.

Once completed in early 2014, the two-story, 78,000-square-foot addition will more than double the size of the current building, allowing for continued expansion of both primary care and specialty services.

It will contain a full-service ambulatory surgery center with four endoscopy suites and four OR's, two pain therapy suites and, most importantly, expand outpatient surgery capabilities and consolidate surgical specialties into one location. The current ambulatory surgical center located at Geisinger-Scenery Park will move to Gray's Woods.

As part of the project, Gray's Wood also will include an expanded radiology department, a comprehensive breast center and expanded cardiovascular, pulmonary, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, GI nutrition and pediatric outreach programs. The otolaryngology practice currently located at University Drive will move to the new Gray's Woods facility as well.

"Gray's Woods II will allow us to decompress our State College facilities, address the phenomenal growth we've seen over the last five years and meet the ever-growing healthcare needs and desires of this community," said Matthew Nussbaum, associate vice president for regional operations. "Nussbaum added that the new facility will enable Geisinger to accommodate partnerships with other medical professionals and organizations as well. He also expects significant hiring as the new addition is completed.

"The construction of the second phase of Gray's Woods demonstrates Geisinger's ongoing commitment to the Centre County region to provide high-end specialty services and expanded primary care programs in the communities where people live and work," Nussbaum said.

Work on the parking deck is expected to be completed in the early fall. Construction on the building will begin in September with an expected completion date of January 2014.
