'Birthplace' now open

June 22, 2012
The Express

WILLIAMSPORT The Birthplace, Susquehanna Health's maternity unit, is now open in its new location on the third floor of Susquehanna Tower at Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

The new Birthplace features striking views, pampering amenities and optimal working conditions for caregivers. Based on patient input, the 17 private postpartum rooms in The Birthplace are filled with amenities such as wireless Internet, flatscreen televisions, an entertainment system for watching movies, mini-refrigerators and upscale toiletries.

A tradition that will continue in the new facility is the five-star quality celebration meal for mothers and family post-delivery.

New mothers have some of the best views in the hospital, with windows overlooking the mountains of Lycoming County. The unit itself houses a glass wall overlooking a two-and-a-half-story atrium. Visitors are welcome at all hours, if desired, and a support person can utilize the comfortable sleep space available in each postpartum room.

"We're extremely proud to provide outstanding care exclusively for moms and babies in a very pleasing environment that will promote family bonding," said Patricia Miller, Director of Mother/Baby/Child at Susquehanna Health.

Nursing stations are decentralized, located just outside every two patient rooms, allowing staff to quickly meet patients' needs. All rooms feature caregiver zones with decentralized nursing work areas positioned outside every two patient rooms. Nursing documentation and medical administration, using barcode technology for safety, will occur at the bedside using in-room computers and scanners.

With easy access from the new parking area, the unit contains six private labor and delivery rooms, an operating room with two recovery areas and four dedicated prenatal testing beds. A five-bed Level II nursery complements the 15-bed newborn nursery. On the same level, the new conference area provides a convenient location for childbirth education classes. Outpatient lactation support is also provided, where moms can bring their babies for weight checks and assistance with breastfeeding concerns.
