McELHATTAN - Wayne Township is gearing up for its second Hometown Heroes Celebration.
The event on Saturday, Sept. 8, will include the unveiling of another round of street banners bearing the faces of Wayne Township veterans. This group of veterans are mostly soldiers and sailors who served in the Korean Conflict.
The 32 new banners will be erected on street lamp posts on the main thoroughfare, where the first group of banners hung for the past two years. They have been taken down and will be given to family members.
All these veterans and families have been invited to attend the event. Families of banners being retired have also been notified so they can pick their banners up.
The celebration on the lawn of McElhattan United Methodist Church, 502 McElhattan Drive will begin at 11 a.m.
Guest speakers include State Sen. John Wozniak, D-Johnstown; Glenn Macklem, a township resident and veteran of the Korean Conflict; Clinton County Veterans Service Officer Melissa Bar. Township supervisor Jim Maguire will act as master of ceremonies. Entertainment will be provided by the Maguire Family and Friends, which includes Jim, Bob and Shirley Maguire, Dane Hanna, Dee Mundrick and Donnie Saar.
The 82nd Airborne Honor Guard will present the colors. A luncheon will follow the ceremony on the church lawn.
The Hometown Heroes committee.includes Darlene Macklem, Peggy Fanning, Marie Bowmaster, Violet Englert and Marion Spong.
