BELLEFONTE - The Hotel Do De, which was extensively damaged by a raging fire during the early morning hours of Sept. 9, will likely have to be tore down.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

That's according to Borough Manager Ralph Stewart, who walked through the burned-out structure and the neighboring Garman Opera House Theatre on Wednesday, along with structural engineer Jesse Smith and Building Code Official Russell Shuey.

"Verbally, our engineer believes the building cannot be salvaged. It's a total loss," Stewart said. "We hope to get a written report at the end of business (Thursday). Once we get the written report, we will be in touch with the property owner and the insurance company and talk about a timeline to raze the building."

Razing the structure, however, will be a difficult process as it is touching two other buildings, the Garman and the Courthouse Annex.
