Gordon R. Shaffer, 90, of 308 Logan Ave., Castanea, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Susque-View Home.
He was born on March 15, 1923 in Tylersville, the son of the late Ira and Blanche Shaffer.
Gordon was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his active duty from 1943 to 1945 during WWII. He served with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, obtaining the rank of Sergeant and was awarded several medals, including the Silver Star Medal. His battalion was missing in action and was nicknamed the "Lost Battalion." He was also wounded in action while serving.

Gordon's first wife, Larue Brown Shaffer, preceded him in death in 1989.
In 1991, at the Castanea United Methodist Church, he married the former Dorothy E. "Dot" McCaslin Nestlerode who survives in Castanea.
He worked at Hammermill Paper Company until his retirement.
Gordon was a very active member of the Castanea United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed working outside in his yard.
In addition to his wife, Dot, he is survived by three daughters, Diane (Paul) Bower of Avis, Ruth Walters of Salona and Jeannine (Edward) Sampsell of Montgomery; a sister, Jean Huey of Madisonburg; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Castanea United Methodist Church, 23 E. Brown St., Castanea, with Rev. Lt. Col. Jerry Sieg and Rev. Bruce Wallace officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven.
Friends and family will be received Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington.
