MIFFLINBURG - Everyone is encouraged to get outdoors and attend events that are planned at R. B. Winter State Park throughout the summer season. Programs are free unless other wise noted; donations are encouraged to cover event costs. Some programs do require advance registration, these are noted below.
SATURDAY, JUNE 22
- STREAM SEARCH -10 -11 a.m.
We will meet at Halfway Run next to the beach to capture and learn about some cool aquatic insects and other critters that inhabit the creek. Participants MUST wear old sneakers or water shoes. Kids under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a "helping" adult. All critters will need to be released at the end of this activity. This is a "Discover E" program and can help you earn a neat certificate and badge if you are 4 to 12 years of age!
- BUGS OF THE UNDERWORLD - 2- 2:45 p.m.
Explore the world of aquatic insects during this interesting video at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center.
SUNDAY, JUNE 23
- RAPID RUN POOLS AND WETLANDS WANDER - 8:30 - 9:45 a.m.
Explore the bogs, shrub swamps and vernal pools of the Rapid Run Natural Area. We will be on the look out for interesting wildflowers, birds and other wildlife as we enjoy a pleasant 1 mile walk. Meet at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center.
- FISHY FUN - 2 - 2:45 p.m.
Learn a little about fish and then get into this fishy art activity at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center. Kids will need the help of an adult.
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY JUNE 26-27
- HIDE AND SEEKERS / OUTDOOR EXPLORERS DAY CAMP - 10 a.m .- noon
Backyard Wildlife will be the subject of our explorations during this 2 day Discover E camp for kids ages 4 to 8 years and their parents. Pre-registration is required. We will be doing stories, crafts, games, and short hikes. Please dress the kids for outdoor play and have on sturdy footwear good for hiking, activities, and playing. A snack, water, sunscreen and bug repellents are recommended. Adults accompanying their kids may also want sunglasses and a hat. Please call R. B. SATURDAY, JUNE 29
- USING A GPS AND BASIC GEOCACHING - 10 - 11:30 a.m.
Ready for some adventure? Always wanted to learn about using a GPS? Equipment, safety, and outdoor ethics will be discussed as well as how to use a GPS unit. We will then test our new skills by going on a short geocache.
SUNDAY, JUNE 30
- LUNA AND OTHER COOL MOTHS - 2 - 2:45 a.m.
Kids ages 4 to 8, learn about the huge green Luna moth during this story and craft. We will also go on a short hike and find a few trees this moth calls home! This is a "Discover E" program and can help you earn a neat certificate and badge. Meet at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center.
FRIDAY, JULY 5
- RATTLIN' RATTLERS - 2 - 3 p.m.
Join the naturalist for a short lesson on Rattlesnakes. Hear a children's story about these elusive reptiles and take part in a short craft activity. Meet at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center. Kids under age 10 must bring a parent. This is a "Discover E" program and can help you earn a neat certificate and badge.
SATURDAY, JULY 6
- OLD FASHIONED SUMMER CELEBRATION - 1- 3:30 p.m.
Have fun with family and friends while playing old-fashioned games and competing in traditional contests. Three legged races, peanut hunts, balloon volleyball and crafts are among the activities planned at the Ball field. This program will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
SATURDAY, JULY 13
- INCREDIBLE INSECTS OPEN HOUSE - 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Explore the world of insects and their creepy relatives! The center will be crawling with puzzles, games, displays, and make and take crafts for kids and their folks who are not bugged by arthropods. Meet at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center. Kids under age 10 must bring a parent. Kids ages 4 to 13 can earn one hour toward their Discover E badge!
SATURDAY, JULY 20
- GOING BATTY! - 10 - 11 a.m.
Kids learn about bats during this story and game! Meet at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center. Kids under age 10 must bring a parent. This is a "Discover E" program and can help you earn a neat certificate and badge.
- MUSHROOMS OF PA - 2 p.m.
Mushroom expert, Bill Russell, will introduce you to the fascinating world of fungi, learn what's edible and what's not and the role of fungus in the forest. If conditions are good a mushroom walk may follow the talk that will begin at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center.
The Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center Open will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the regular summer season if staff or volunteers are available. The Center offers displays of Pennsylvania wildlife, hands on activity centers appropriate for children and adults, a nature oriented library and our viewing window which overlooks one of the park's wildlife gardens. list of program topics are available for each class and age level.
