Scott Hurst wins NYPL Player of the Week Award

Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes outfielder Scott Hurst has been named the New York-Penn League’s Player of the Week for the week of August 14-20, 2017.

Hurst earned the honors after racking up four multi-hit games during the Spikes’ road trip through West Virginia and Auburn. The Glendora, CA native also became just the second player in franchise history to record back-to-back four-hit games when he did so on Saturday and Sunday in Auburn, and hit the latest home run in Spikes history with a 15th-inning blast to win Friday night’s game at West Virginia.

The Cardinals’ 2017 third-round draft choice out of Cal State-Fullerton, Hurst is now sixth in the NYPL in hitting with a .309 average, and his .463 slugging percentage ranks fifth-best in the league.

Hurst follows Evan Mendoza , who earned consecutive Player of the Week awards for July 24-30 and July 31-August 6, as Spikes to cop weekly honors this season.

The three NYPL Player of the Week awards earned by Spikes this season are the most in a single season since the club earned three Player of the Week and two Pitcher of the Week awards in 2010.

Spikes fans can catch Hurst and the rest of the club in action at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Monday and Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park during a six-game homestand from Tuesday through Sunday.The West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) will serve as the opposition for three games apiece.

Highlights include a special appearance by Hall of Fame pro wrestler Hacksaw Jim Duggan, presented by Nuts For You and Comcast Spotlight, on Friday, August 25, a pair of Spike-tacular FIREWORKS shows, the return of $1 Beer Thursday presented by BIG Froggy 101, and Mifflin & Juniata County Night along with a Purple & Black Hat Giveaway presented by ServiceMaster by Holobinko & Merry Maids on Saturday, August 26.
