FISHERTOWN — With only two games to play before the start of the playoffs, both Chestnut Ridge and Bellefonte looked to keep the momentum rolling as each team had six-game winning streaks heading into Friday night’s game.
It was a one-possession game going into the half, but the Lions exploded for 29 points in the second half to down the Red Raiders, 41-21.
Up 12-7 early in the third quarter, Chestnut Ridge scored on a four-play, 49-yard drive to go up by two scores. The Lions got pushed back to its own 38-yard line with a holding penalty, and one play later, Logan Hauck hooked up with Seth Harbaugh for a 47-yard completion. On the next play, Hauck connected with Jared McGill in the back corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown with 9:54 left in the third. Hauck ran in the two-point conversion to put the Lions on top, 20-7.
After both teams took turns punting the ball, the Lions had good field position starting at their own 49-yard line. Ridge picked up two first downs through the air and one on a holding penalty by Bellefonte to put the ball at the Red Raider eight-yard line.
Hauck connected with Jared McGill on a screen pass, and McGill dove across the pylon for the Lion touchdown. McGill ran in the two-point try to extend Ridge’s lead to 28-7 with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter.
Bellefonte cut lead in half on its next series with a three-yard run by Dylan Deitrich. Dexter Gallishaw setup Deitrich’s touchdown with a 42-yard scamper to place the ball inside the five-yard line. Chris Peraiko’s PAT was good, and the Red Raiders trailed the Lions, 28:14 with 11:56 left in the fourth.
Any momentum Bellefonte may have gained with the touchdown was lost as Ridge scored on its next series on the first play. Hauck took the quarterback keeper 67 yards to give the Lions a 34-14 advantage.
On the Red Raiders’ next series, Deitrich threw an interception to Ty Diehl that set up the Lions on Bellefonte’s 15-yard line. Two plays later, Hauck ran in his third touchdown of the game to make it a 41-14 game with 10:31 left in the fourth quarter.
Bellefonte scored the last points of the game as the Red Raiders took a 10-play, 75-yard drive into the end zone off a Gallishaw two-yard run with 5:52 left in regulation. The drive included a 26-yard pass from Deitrich to Cade Fortney and a 32-yard run from Gallishaw.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Bellefonte coach Shanon Manning noted how this game was more of a learning lesson for his team rather than a heart-breaking defeat.
“We took our foot off the gas and didn’t finish what we started in the first half,” said Manning. “When we play a good football team like Chestnut Ridge, we can’t do that.
“That was a great lesson for us tonight. There is nothing hurt from this loss, and this just needs to be a learning experience for us. We have a great opportunity to finish our season at 8-2, and we are still going in the right direction.”
Ridge put up the first points of the game with a two-yard run from Hauck in the first quarter. The drive included three first downs and a 20-yard scamper from Hauck to give the Lions an early 6-0 lead as the extra point was blocked.
Early in the second quarter, the Red Raiders forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Bellefonte capitalized on the drive and went 49 yards on 11 plays as CJ Funk scored from one-yard out to give the Bellefonte a 7-6 lead with 7:36 left in the second.
Ridge scored one more time before the half ended on its next drive. Hauck connected with McCoy on a six-yard pass in the end zone to put Ridge back on top, 12-7.
GAME NOTES — Bellefonte’s Gallishaw ran the ball 88 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. … The Red Raiders ran for 214 yards and passed for 63 yards. … Bellefonte, 8-2, plays at Bald Eagle Area in its regular season finale.
