Jersey Shore takes out rival Bald Eagle Area, 31-7

WINGATE- Jersey Shore’s explosive offense rightfully gets its due respect, but their defense is often overlooked.

Jersey Shore’s defense surrendered under 200 yards, forced eight three-and-outs and three turnovers to power the Bulldogs to a 31-7 victory over Bald Eagle Area.

Save for two long runs by BEA’s Blake Roberts, the Bulldogs were stingy all night. They intercepted two Derek Henry passes and forced a fumble. BEA’s offense converted only six first downs in the game.

“The defense has been awesome all year,” Jersey Shore head coach Tom Gravish said. “We love our defense.”

BEA’s Blake Roberts commenced the day with a 74-yard yard run on the Eagles’ second play of the game. Roberts bust through the middle of the field and made a nice cut on the sideline before a shoe-string tackle brought him down at the 1-yard line. Roberts’ run set up Derek Henry’s 1-yard TD run to put BEA up, 7-0, with 9:16 remaining in the opening quarter.

Roberts ended the day with just seven carries, but for 151 yards. Despite nursing an injury, Roberts was able to break free for two runs over 60 yards.

“He’s super fast,” BEA coach Jesse Nagle said of Roberts. “No one’s going to catch him if he’s not limping, still.”

The Bulldogs went on a 31-0 scoring rally after Henry’s touchdown. Jersey Shore’s Kyle Tomb punched the ball in from 3-yards out on the Bulldogs’ ensuing possession to tie the game at seven-points apiece, with 5:07 remaining in the opening quarter.

Jersey Shore extended its lead in the second quarter after quarterback Elijah Shemory connected with Jason Dincher for a 4-yard touchdown reception

Shemory went 12-for-20 passing with 133 yards and three touchdowns. He threw his three touchdown passes to three different receivers as he spread the ball evenly to his top targets.

DUAL THREAT

Bulldog Hunter Frantz is a home wrecker on both sides of the ball.

On offense, Frantz had three receptions for 53 yards and one touchdown. He had a highlight-reel catch when he hauled in a 34-yard reception down the sideline, which set up Dincher’s 4-yard touchdown reception.

On defense, Frantz picked off BEA quarterback Derek Henry’s pass and returned it 76 yards.

WORKHORSE

Jersey Shore head coach Tom Gravish called running back Kyle Tomb’s name often on Friday night.

Tomb was a workhorse in the game and finished the day with 33 carries for 111 and one touchdown.

Gravish said Tomb is a tough athlete who’s willing to accept whatever task the coaching staff asks of him.

“He’s a physical kid,” Gravish said of Tomb. “If we ask him to go 55 [carries], he would go 55. He’s just a good kid, and he wouldn’t call for more [carries] if you just gave it to him ten times. That’s just the kind of kid he his.”

Tomb also had a sack and interception on defense.

DISRUPTIVE

The Bulldogs defense was in the face of BEA quarterback Derek Henry all night.

The Bulldogs had five sacks on defense by five different players, as BEA’s offensive line struggled to protect in Henry in the game.

“We fell apart up front,” BEA coach Jesse Nagle said. “Jersey Shore was doing the same thing up front and we just kept allowing them to do it up front. If you’re not good in the trenches, and they’ve got a nice defensive front, we’ve got to figure a way to slow them down.”

“We tried to figure out a way to slow them down, but they just kept on coming after us,” Nagle added. “If we can’t make the blocks, nothing’s going to transform it for us.”

WHO’S NEXT?

Jersey Shore (6-3) will host Central Mountain in its regular season finale. Bald Eagle Area (4-5) hosts cross-town rival Bellefonte.
