THANK YOU, SENIORS: Central Mountain Wildcats fall to Selinsgrove, 40-3, on Senior Night
MILL HALL – Heading into Friday night’s game, Central Mountain coach Jim Renninger was concerned about Selinsgrove quarterback Logan Leiby, and he had every right to be.
Central Mountain’s defense struggled to contain Selinsgrove’s pass-game as the Wildcats were dropped by the Seals, 40-3, on Senior Night.
Central Mountain’s record dips to 1-7 following the loss.
“Selinsgrove’s a very good football team,” Central Mountain coach Jim Renninger said. “They’re big, they’re physical, they have athletes and their quarterback’s special.”
Central Mountain’s lone score was a 38-yard field goal by Austyn Carson. The score capped a 7:24 drive by the Wildcats following a Seth Andrus interception.
Selinsgrove quarterback Logan Leiby was dominant from the opening whistle. He started the game with 11 straight completions en route to an 28-for-35 passing day with 428 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Leiby’s first touchdown of the game was a 4-yard score to Anthony Dressler to cap off a 74-yard scoring drive for the Seals, to put Selinsgrove up 7-0 in the opening quarter.
After Central Mountain went three-and-out on its opening drive, Selinsgrove stormed down the field for a 75-yard drive capped off by a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Joseph Kahn.
Leiby threw for another touchdown in the opening quarter to put Selinsgrove up 20-0 entering the second. He finished the game with four passing touchdowns, two to both Jarrett Inch and Anthony Dressler.
After surrendering 20 points in the opening quarter, the Wildcats defense were able to shutout the Seals offense in the second.
Seth Andrus picked off a Seals pass with 8:36 left in the quarter to set up Austyn Carson’s 38-yard field goal. The kick cut Central Mountain’s deficit, 20-3, with 1:12 left in the half.
On Selinsgrove’s ensuing possession, Trevor Hanna picked off Leiby’s pass to give the Wildcats defense back-to-back interceptions. Central Mountain forced two turnovers in the quarter.
“We got ourselves into the right position and Leiby made a wrong read on the one [interception,]” Renninger explained. “On the other [interception] he overshot a kid and we were in the right position. You need to make those kind of plays to have any chance to beat a team like that.”
FINAL HOME GAME
Although Central Mountain dropped the game 40-3 to the Seals, Renninger was impressed with his team’s effort. The Wildcats fought hard each play but just lost to a better team.
“When you lose 40-3, you’re never happy,” Renninger said. “But what I want to talk about was the character of our seniors and our kids. They came out against a very good football team and the Leiby kid was kind of dissecting us there and put them up 20-0, real quick. When you’re a 1-6 football team, it’s easy to fold up the tent at that point.”
“But we came back and actually won the second quarter, 3-0,” he continued. “We played real hard, got a couple of turnovers and got a few stops, then came back in the second half and fought and battled.”
He was especially proud of his seniors who played their final game at Don Malinak Stadium.
“I’m real proud of the way the seniors finished their career at home,” Renninger said. “Obviously, it’s not the result they wanted, but they played with character, effort and they played hard.”
Central Mountain travels to Hollidaysburg to take on the Golden Tigers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
