Centre girl earns top honor as gymnast

LOCK HAVEN – A 13-year-old gymnast with ties to Clinton County earned top honors at a recent all-around competition in Harrisburg.

Abby Brushwood finished first on bars, floor and vault, and second on beam, propelling her to a first place finish in the All Around competition with a combined score of 37.9.

The event was the prestigious Judge’s Cup Competition, and Abby’s achievements propel her to the National Judge’s Cup Level 7 Competition in Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 6.

Abby’s teammate, Azlynn Heverly, took sixth place honors.

Both girls will represent the Pennsylvania All-Star team in Oregon.

Abby and Azylnn both live in State College, where they are members of the Centre Elite Competitive Gymnastic Team.

Brushwood is the daughter of Brian and Tiffany (Clemente) Brushwood of State College.

She’s the granddaughter of Tom and Donna Clemente of Woolrich, and Marcia and Marion Brushwood of Annapolis, Md.

Abby is also the great-granddaughter of Jennie Bressler & Irma Clemente, both of Renovo.

She attends Park Forest Middle School in State College.

The National Judges Cup is the only invitational in the country that supports a four-judge panel for all levels of competition. The event affords judges and participants the opportunity to judge with and be judged by some of the most recognized and prestigious judges in the country

The National Judges Cup features the prestigious Level 7 All Star State Team Challenge.

Six member state sponsored teams compete for the title of Level 7 State Team National Champions.

There is a total of 55 teams representing nine states competing in this year’s competition.
