RIVALRY RENEWED: Central Mountain takes this round of the renewal over Bellefonte, 50-15
FARWELL — It was a rare dual meet at Bucktail Area High School on Monday when Central Mountain hosted the Bellefonte Red Raiders in Farwell, and in a match both schools agreed to allow Bucktail wrestling fans a chance to see a match featuring some of their own.
With Bucktail not having a wrestling team for the last five years, those students that want to wrestle travel to Central Mountain all season to participate as a Wildcat/Bucktail co-op program. This year, three junior high students, Tristan Probst, Paul Risley and Robert Devaul, join four varsity Bucktail students, Ben Probert, Gage Sutliff, Tanner Riggle and Logan Long on the Central Mountain rosters.
It was a Central Mountain home match that had organizers from Bucktail set up extra seating on the stage, something that was more than needed as fans from both schools packed the Dale Florey Memorial Gymnasium.
As luck would have it, Bucktail senior Logan Long drew the first match of the night when he took on fellow 145 pound wrestler Kenneth Simpson. Long picked up a quick pin at the 1:13 mark giving the Bucktail and Central Mountain fans something that they wanted to see in the first minute of the night.
Following an Ethan Richner 7-0 decision at 152, Asher Corl and Tanner Weaver also picked up first period pins before Bucktail freshman Gage Sutliff picked up a major decision, again giving the fans plenty to cheer about. The route was on as Central Mountain went on to a 50-15 team win.
Jacob Edwards, Jason Rinker and Johnny Shreffler each added pins for the Wildcats, as State Qualifier Cole Stewart picked up the lone Red Raider pin on the night. For many at the school, it was a night dedicated to the Bucktail wrestlers, a sentiment not lost on Central Mountain Coach Biff Walizer before the match.
“Tonight’s match is just a way to give some special recognition to the seven Bucktail students who are a part of the Central Mountain/Bucktail wrestling program co-op,” Walizer said following the match.
The coach noted that the contributions can be seen up and down the line-up, from senior Logan Long to freshman Gage Sutliff.
“Tanner and Logan have been important pieces to the success of the CM wrestling team over the last two seasons, Gage is a talented freshman with a bright future,” said the coach. “We appreciate the sacrifices all these student athletes make in logging a lot of miles up and down the river over the course of a wrestling season.”
