TOUGH BREAK: Galeton High goes on 19-0 run, Lady Bucks drop to 2-3 after 65-29 loss

FARWELL — The Lady Bucks fell to 2-3 on the season last night when the Galeton Lady Tigers used a 19-0 run to catapult them to a 65-29 win last night in Farwell.

It was one of those nights when what could go wrong often did as Bucktail couldn’t put a stop to a rough first half.

Galeton jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game. It took the Lady Bucks a couple of minutes, but just after the half way point of the first quarter the home team closed the game to 10-6. Then the bottom fell out.

Galeton went with a press that made every Bucktail possession a struggle. Turnovers became the norm, as even when the Lady Bucks could get shots off, they were forced and quick. Even luck went the way of the visiting team as several Bucktail shots hit the front of the rim, bouncing fourteen feet away right into Lady Tiger’s arms.

It would be seven minutes of game time as Galeton went on a 19-0 run before Bucktail would score again, when Maria D’Onofrio hit a three point shot making the score, 29-9. Galeton’s M. Shadle paced the 19-0 run with 8 points in that span including two 3-point shots.

The Lady Bucks tightened the ship in the second half, but never found consistent scoring or ball handling. With at least three sophomores on the court at all times, coach Carl Gentzyel summoned up the word “inexperience” often following the game.

“We had three sophomores in the starting line-up, shot about 14% and just didn’t execute in moving the ball, sure, inexperience was certainly part of the story, but that’s not to take anything away from Galeton tonight,” Gentzyel said following the game. The Lady Bucks made just 11-of-45 shots from the field while committing 20 turnovers.

“Maria did well tonight leading our team, as a senior we need her leadership and she ran just about every successful play tonight,” Gentzyel said on a positive note. “Myka Poorman started to step up for us tonight; we need to get scoring from wherever we can so Myka’s 9 points were something that we needed”.

The Lady Bucks will no doubt continue to improve. At 3-2, the young team faced several games getting postponed before the Christmas break and have plenty of basketball in front of them. Tonight, Bucktail travels to Columbia Montour Vo-Tech as the being looking to improve one game at a time.
