Bald Eagles split offensive outburst with Alderson

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (4-2) went 1-1 on Saturday as they split a double header with Alderson Broaddus (1-5) in a series that featured 54 total runs between the two teams to go along with 12 home runs. Alderson Broaddus was able to take game one 12-10 while the Bald Eagles took game two 19-13.

In game one, LHU trailed 3-1 going into the third inning, but RBI singles by Cayden Stover (Beech Creek, Pa./Chesapeake College) and Jimmy Webb (Williamsport, Pa./Wake Forest) to go along with a two-run home run by Justin Sleigh (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) highlighted a four-run inning that allowed The Haven to jump in front 5-3.

Alderson Broaddus was able to add two more runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at five after the third inning.

In the top of the sixth, Lock Haven was able to jump out to an 8-5 lead after Nick Stotler (Pittsburgh/Coker College) hit a three-run home run over the center field fence.

In the bottom of the inning, ABU was able to take a 12-8 lead into the seventh after a big seven run inning.

Lock Haven was able to cut the deficit to 12-10 after John Banes (Springfield, Pa. Cumberland CC) hit a two run homer, but it wasn’t quite enough as LHU fell 12-10 in a game that featured 28 combined hits and eight home runs.

LHU’s offense had five different players have multi-hit games. Stover went 3-4 while adding an RBI and scoring two runs while Stotler, Sleigh, Ethan Moore (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and Liam McArthur (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall) all had two hits.

Stotler led the team with four RBIs while Sleigh and Banes each had two.

In game two, Alderson Broaddus was able to get off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Lock Haven was able to respond and score two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by McArthur and trim the deficit to 5-2.

LHU got the bats rolling again in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three more runs and tying the game at 5-5 highlighted by a two-run single by McArthur.

The offensive fireworks continued in the fifth as ABU scored five more runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead 10-5, The Bald Eagles were able to score nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump in front 14-10. Highlighting the nine-run fifth was a two-run home run by Sleigh and an RBI double by Demetrius Haskins (Pittsburgh/Taylor Alderdice) to go along with two RBI walks.

After Alderson Broaddus tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 14-12, Lock Haven got the bats rolling once again. Kolby Dehaas (Coeur D’alene, Idaho/Wenatchee Valley Community College) hit a three-run homer to highlight another five run inning to push The Haven lead to 19-12. The 19 runs are the most runs the Bald Eagles have scored in a single game since LHU put up 21 runs in a 21-2 victory over Juniata College back in 2012.

In the end, ABU was able to score a run to make it 19-13, but Lock Haven was able to halt any chance of a rally and get the win.

McArthur led the way in game two, going 3-4 while scoring four runs and totaling five RBIs. Dehaas went 2-3 with his home run, scored two runs and four RBIs.

Moore, Sleigh, and Haskins each had two hits for LHU. Haskins was also able to score four runs while Moore and Sleigh each scored two.

The Bald Eagles will get right back to the field early tomorrow (March 4) for a double-header with Davis and Elkins. Game one is set for an 11:00 am first pitch with game two following after game one.
