No. 4 PSU set to host No. 5 Minnesota in B1G Quarters

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Fresh off their first-ever sweep over No. 11 Minnesota last weekend the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions will host those same Golden Gophers in a Big Ten Quarterfinal best-of-three series this weekend March 2-4.

THIS WEEK’S MATCHUP

-Penn State enters the weekend winners of three-in-a-row after going winless in eight games prior. The Nittany Lions are also coming off their first-ever sweep over Minnesota as they get ready to face the Gophers once more.

-Minnesota holds the all-time series advantage at 14-7-0 including a 6-4-0 mark at Pegula Ice Arena, but Penn State has won four of the last five meetings between the two schools including winning the season series for the first-time ever this season taking three-of-four games and 9-of-12 points against the Gophers.

-Sophomore Denis Smirnov has registered at least one point in six of his last seven games against the Gophers and has five goals and six assists for 11 career points in nine games against Minnesota. The sophomore scored a goal in three of the four games this season against the Gophers.

-Junior Andrew Sturtz is tied with Smirnov for the most points by current Nittany Lions against the Gophers with 11 career points on four goals and seven assists.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA

-The Gophers were swept for the fourth time this season and the third time on the road.
