Slattery throws no-hitter, LHU takes two

CLERMONT, Fla. — Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) threw a no-hitter in her first full game back as the Lock Haven University softball team (3-5) opened up action at the PFX tournament as LHU took on Northwood (5-3) before playing the second game of the day against Post (1-3). The Bald Eagles soared in game one over Northwood 9-7 and got the 8-0 victory (6 innings) in game two vs Post.

In the win over Post, Slattery was dominant in the circle as she threw a six inning gem striking out nine batters and walking only three. The Post Eagles only could get one base runner past first base when they laid down a sacrifice bunt in the third inning to advance the runner to second base.

Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J. Hammonton) stepped up in a big way as she knocked in four runs including the final run in the sixth to give Lock Haven the eight run lead which ended the game (run rule).

Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) also had a multi-hit game as she recorded three RBI’s. Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) knocked in one more RBI for the Bald Eagles. Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Senior) made all three of her plate appearances count as she went a perfect 3-3.

In the morning game vs Northwood, LHU bats came alive early as they scored five runs in the second inning to take the 5-1 lead. In the third inning, LHU scored two more runs to push its lead to 7-1. The Timberwolves would not go down without a fight as they scored six runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at seven. However, Lock Haven tacked on two runs in the six to secure the 9-7 victory.

Leading the way at the plate was an all-around effort as seven Bald Eagles recorded a hit. Mathes, Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caravel Academy) and Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) all recorded a multi-hit game.

Mathes drove in three runs on two hits while Carpenter blasted a two-run home run. Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa/Troy) and Caputo both drove in one run apiece.

Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa/Loyalsock) got the victory on the mound for Lock Haven as she pitched 2 2/3 innings scattering five hits on two runs. Slattery came on in relief and earned the save as she pitched two innings of no hit ball to go along with her no hitter in the second game.

The Bald Eagles will hit the field tomorrow for day two of the PFX Tournament when LHU takes on Salem International at 2 p.m. before facing Jefferson at 4:30 p.m.
