No. 24 LHU beats No. 19 Mercyhurst, still perfect at home

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 24 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (8-3, 4-2 PSAC) used a tremendous second half to knock off No. 19 Mercyhurst University (6-4, 4-2 PSAC) 16-7 this afternoon on Charlotte Smith Field in a battle of two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) powers ranked in the top-25 nationally.

After falling behind 3-1 early in the game, Ashley Gochenaur (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) put her first of five goals on the day in the back of the net to stop the Mercyhurst run and start a run for LHU. The Bald Eagles scored five of the next six goals in the game as Gochenaur and Alex O’Herrick (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) each netted two, first-half goals to help give The Haven a 7-5 lead at the half.

In the second half, Lock Haven scored the first five goals to extend the lead to 12-5 and never looked back. The Bald Eagles outscored The Lakers 9-2 in the half behind tremendous defense from the LHU back line.

True-freshman Lauren Girardi (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) was sensational in just her second career start, racking up 10 saves and holding Mercyhurst to single-digit goals for just the third time this season.

Gochenaur and O’Herrick led the LHU offense, totaling five goals each and leading The Haven charge. O’Herrick also led the Bald Eagles with five draw controls while Gochenaur totaled four.

Katie Costanza (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) added a hat-trick for Lock Haven.

Hayley Kilian (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) had a goal to go along with her team-high four assists while Dana Laulis (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) added three assists of her own.

The Bald Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they make the short trip east to take on local-rival Bloomsburg University at 4 p.m. in PSAC action.
