Ohio State University takes finale over Nittany Lions

UNIVERSITY PARK – Ohio State took both ends of a baseball doubleheader by winning the finale, 19-8, Saturday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Buckeyes earned a 5-1 victory in the first game of the day.

First baseman Shea Sbranti (Oakley, Calif.) hit a three-run home run for his first Penn State homer and also doubled and walked, designated hitter Parker Hendershot (Barton, N.Y.) enjoyed a career game, as he reached base four times by going 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs, and classmate Kris Kremer (Hershey, Pa.) tallied his first career hit – an RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth.

For Ohio State, first baseman Conner Pohl and left fielder Tyler Cowles both hit two-run home runs, while centerfielder Dillon Dingler and right fielder Dominic Canzone both went 3-for-5.

Penn State kept pace with Ohio State early. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with Cowles’ two-run home run highlighting the frame, but then Sbranti brought Penn State back within a run with a three-run home run into the right field bleachers in the bottom of the second inning. Ohio State posted another four-run inning in the third with Cowles driving in two more, but Hendershot drove in two for Penn State with a base hit up the middle in the bottom half to pull within three at 8-5.

However, the Buckeyes took command for good in the fourth though with Pohl’s two-run home run highlighting a three-run frame, as Ohio State outscored the Nittany Lions from there to secure the win.

RHP Adam Niemeyer (3-2) earned the win in five innings of work, while LHP Dante Biasi (Hazle Township, Pa.) (1-5) suffered the loss.

Penn State next hosts Mount St. Mary’s Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
